Our History

On April 9, 1980, the prayers of a handful of Episcopalians residing in the Owasso area were answered. This group of devoted Episcopalians had long wanted to see a mission started in this area and had met with the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma concerning this dream. With the support of several Tulsa-area priests and the Bishop, the Rt. Reverend Gerald McAllister, the Diocesan Council on Missions, in March 1980, approved the establishment of an Episcopal community in the Owasso/Collinsville area. On April 9th, a meeting was held at the Owasso Public Library to discuss Diocesan policy and to have any questions answered that might still remain.

The name, "Church of the Holy Cross, Episcopal", was chosen by the members of the new Episcopal Mission; and the church began holding Bible study and worship services on Wednesday evenings at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Collinsville. Tulsa-area priests took turns being celebrants at the Holy Eucharist services, with Father Ron Peak being appointed to serve as Priest-in-Charge. The first baptism and confirmation service was held on July 16, 1980, with Assistant Bishop William Cox as celebrant and 45 people in attendance.

Over the next eight years, Church of the Holy Cross members met in several different locations—St. Henry's Catholic Church, Mills Elementary School, MTC Center and Rhythmic Notion Dance Studio.

In 1984 the Diocese purchased four acres of land in Owasso to be the site of a new Episcopal Church in Owasso. A building committee was formed, and the job of planning for a new church building began. In 1988, construction began on the building; and on December 11, 1988, the new Church of the Holy Cross building was consecrated and dedicated in a service presided over by Bishop Robert Moody.

Finally, the Church of the Holy Cross had their own meeting place; their wanderings were over.

We still have members from those early days and look forward to making new friends and adding many more to our church family.
